The Winklevoss Twins are launching a blockchain marketplace for tradeable digital art.

According to a report by Bloomberg, crypto entrepreneurs Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are turning their attention towards a marketplace for digital art using blockchain.

The Winklevoss Twins, who co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, are launching the startup Nifty Gateway on Tuesday. The new platform will allow consumers to buy and sell digital collectibles from artists including Michael Kagan and Lyle Owerko. Kagan is known for his T-shirt design collaborations with singer Pharrell, while Owerko has had his photographs featured on the cover of TIME magazine.

Owerko told Bloomberg in a phone interview,

I have never done anything like this before, which is all the more reason to do it now.

According to the report, the platform will preserve digital art on a blockchain, allowing artists to issue limited edition pieces. The Winklevoss twins envision Nifty becoming a marketplace for trading and storing digital art and collectibles, including stamps and comics.

Blockchain collectibles have been gaining popularity in gaming, with ethereum’s CryptoKitties being a prime example. Sporting organizations such as the L.A. Dodgers have also experimented with digital collectibles.
