Ethereum’s blockchain network is home to more decentralized applications (dapps) than any other network, however, rivals such as TRON are seeing more usage, recently published data shows.

Dapps are smart contracts used to help build platforms that can be used in applications for activities such as operating exchanges, gambling or certain governance systems.

Quarterly Data

Data from Dapp.com showed that of the 484 new dapps that were brought to market this quarter, more than half were developed on the Ethereum network. Here’s how they were distributed:

  • Ethereum – 264
  • TRON – 132
  • Eos – 56
  • Iost – 19
  • TomoChain – 8
  • Steem – 5

Dapp.com said in its research:

484 new dapps were added to the market this quarter, and Ethereum is still the first choice for developers, followed by TRON and EOS. Newly launched blockchains like TomoChain and IOST are quickly expanding, but the first tier blockchains have already gone way ahead.

Active Users Increase

But in active usage, those dapps that run on the Ethereum blockchain were lagged behind rival TRON. Total active usage in the quarter hit a record 1,159,482 users. Here how the main networks broke down in active users:

  • TRON – 445,054
  • Ethereum – 365,112
  • Eos – 276,563
  • Steem – 55,616
  • Iost – 14,280
  • TomoChain – 2,857

Of the top 15 dapps ranked on Dapp.com, the highest three were developed on the TRON blockchain. TRON had five dapps ranked in the top 15, Eos also had five, while Ethereum totalled four, with Steem taking the final placing.

Seven of the top 15 ranked dapps are for gambling platforms – indeed gambling accounts for 39% of all active usage, making it the common use case. Nine out of 10 of TRON dapp transactions were related to cryptocurrency gambling in the second quarter.
