Europol has recently revealed it’s developing a game to help law enforcement officers learn how to investigate illicit uses of cryptocurrencies, presumably helping them dig through patterns of blockchain data.

The project, dubbed a ‘cryptocurrency-tracing serious game’ by the agency, is being developed in collaboration with CENTRIC (Center of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence, and Organized Crime Research), to help officials in investigating crimes in which cryptocurrencies are involved.

The game is set to be launched  in October at the seventh Europol-INTERPOL Cybercrime Conference, according to an announcement Europol published regarding its sixth Cryptocurrency Conference.

While details about the game itself are scarce, it’s believed it’ll use gamification to create training opportunities for law enforcement officers, to help them improve at tracing cryptocurrency transactions.

At the conference itself, industry experts from law enforcement agencies shared their best practices when dealing with cryptocurrency-related investigations, The Next Web reports, and detailed how they proceeded with cryptocurrency mixer Bestmixer and dark web marketplace Wall Street Market.

As CryptoGlobe covered, the Wall Street Market was taken down in early May of this year, in a move that saw some believe the founders pulled an exit scam. Bestmixer was shut down later that same month in the “first law enforcement action of its kind.”

Shortly after, cryptocurrency mixing service Bitcoin Blender shut down on its own, presumably in anticipation of potential action from agencies across Europe. The service’s admins simply asked users to withdraw their funds before the website was taken down.
