John Galton, an American anarchist, bitcoin enthusiast, and marijuana activist was recently shot dead in his home in the Mexican resort of Acapulco, in what seems to have been a break-in. Galton was the host of ‘Anarchapulco Fork’ Anarchoforko.

According to the Daily Mail, the event sent shivers through the tightknit anti-establishment community that organizes events in Acapulco. These events include seminars on freedom-related topics, and on how to make money with cryptocurrencies.

On social media, John partner Lily Forester posted updates on the situation, revealing she saw the gunmen go straight for John and his friend Jason Henza, who was also shot. Henza, however, reportedly made it to a private hospital with bullets wounds in an armpit, leg, and had, but checked out the day he got in.

In a video on social media, a distressed Lily screams for help and asks for “somebody [to] please come” as she revealed Galton was dead and “Henza is in the other room dying.” Henza, in a blood-smattered T-Shirt, posted a video where he says:

Hey guys, I just wanted to say I love you. We were attacked. I’ve been shot three times. I’m not doing so good. I know, thoughts and prayers and all that stuff.

In the video, he goes on to note he thinks “its backlash,” before turning off the camera saying he’s going to try to survive the attack. Before the shooting, the Daily Mail reports Galton and Forester hosted weekly “Meat Ups” where they went to eat only meat.

The couple was reportedly also recruiting speaker for their conference, which was set to take place later this month. On decentralized social media platform Steemit, users have been trying to confirm whether Lily is OK.

In an update one posted, a Facebook post form Anarchapulco founder Jeff Berwick can be found. In it, he names a potential suspect who has threatened him and John in the past, but notes “better intel I have received is that it was six shooters from the cartel.”

He added that the couple was living in “one of the most dangerous parts of Acapulco,” and that Galton was “dealing cocaine and marijuana according to numerous sources.” He added:

They also had made some enemies with cartel in that area according to sources. I have said in the past that there is one thing that can get you killed n Mexico as a foreigner and that is competing with the cartel in the drug business.

Berwick has since deleted his posts to protect some of the information contained in them. A US Department of State official has reportedly claimed the Bureau of Consular Affairs was aware of an investigation into the death of a US citizen in the region, but didn’t provide additional information over privacy concerns.

Acapulco reportedly has a murder rate of 64.2 per 100,000 residents. Galton’s mother, Judith, has since started a fundraising campaign through PayPal.
