Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has posted a tongue-in-cheek tweet about bitcoin.

After expressing his love for anime at around 22:30 UTC yesterday, Elon Musk posted another tweet shortly after. The tweet featured a picture of the bitcoin logo with a female anime character and read: “Wanna buy some bitcoin?”.

The image was taken from Cryptocurrency Girls, a website dedicated to turning some of the most popular cryptocurrencies into anime characters.

Known by some as the “real-life Iron Man”, Elon Musk has a staggering presence on social media. The thread became rapidly popular, attracting over 8000 likes and over 3000 retweets in a matter of hours of being posted.

But what was Elon Musk trying to say with his cryptic tweet? It’s likely that the entrepreneur was just having some fun with the crypto community. It might have been an indirect response to numerous fake news reports stating that it was possible to buy Musk’s famous flamethrowers with bitcoin.

However, some fans and crypto enthusiast took it a step further and speculated that the tweet was an indicator that Tesla would soon start accepting bitcoin as a method of payment. Zhao Ghangpeng, one of the founders of Binance, seems to have also found some humor in the situation and retweeted: “Lol, it’s spreading. I will buy a Tesla if you accept crypto…”

But perhaps the most ironic element of the whole event happened after the tweet when Elon Musk was locked out of his twitter account:

This ban was almost definitely a result of his bitcoin tweet, as many celebrity impersonators and other scammers rely on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to steal from unknowing users. Musk is one of the most frequently impersonated celebrities on twitter as he had already asked Jackson Palmer, the founder of Dogecoin, if he could him help get rid of the annoying scam spammers. Palmer was able to help Musk, providing him with a script that blocked ether giveaway scammers.
